Reasons Against cloning:
Cloning takes many tries to finally produce a clone. We believe that if it doesn't work all the time then there is no point in trying to produce a clone. In one type of cloning called embryo twinning they use an embryo to produce the clone. Sometimes the enucleated egg and the new nucleus from another cell aren't compatible. The pregnancy with the cloned embryos sometimes fails and the developing in the surrogate mother also sometimes fails. " ...its success rate has not improved much since Dolly's day - she was the sole surviving adult from 277 attempts" (Whitfield). This just shows how many tries it takes to produce one sheep from cloning. With humans it will take even longer than a sheep because we are much more complex. "More than 100 nuclear transfer procedures could be required to produce one viable clone"(Cloning Fact Sheet). There won't be human cloning for quite some time and maybe forever. There really is no point to cloning if it takes that long to produce a living clone.
Cloning is a very controversial topic because many people have different opinions on whether it is morally right or wrong. We believe that is morally wrong because one way of cloning is called embryo twinning which takes an embryo and divides it. Many times it does not successfully work. We believe that if this way does not work all the time then there is no point in destroying embryos for nothing. Destroying embryos is controversial because many people have different opinions on if embryos are living human beings and we believe they are human beings. They are human beings because they are a living cell that will eventually develop. But other people believe they are not so it is very debateable whether it is morale or not.
If cloning in the future happens all the time then people's individuality as a human will decrease. If there are multiple copies of one person then people will begin to look more alike, which is not right because people are made to be unique. "...for cloned individuals, in particular, since the cloned person could simply be replaced with another clone" (Stith-Coleman). Clones will have the same personality because they have the same genes and those make up how a person acts and behaves. The world as we know it would change immensely if cloning starts to take place in humans because there will be no more uniqueness in human beings. Our diversity will not be as much because people will be cloning the humans that they find smart, attractive, or other appealing traits to have in a human. Human beings are known for how different we all are from one another and we can't lose that. If cloning starts to happen in humans then society will change greatly as we know it.
Cloning causes many medical issues for the organism the was cloned. Organisms that have been cloned are usually much bigger than the same natural organisms and this usually leads to breathing, blood flow, and many other health problems. If clones do not have this then later on in life they will most likely get kidney or brain problems and bad immune systems, which can cause problems later in life (What are the Risks of Cloning?). Another medical issue many clones may face is they have shorter telomeres than natural organisms. Telomeres are are the sequences of DNA at the end of a chromosome. When organisms age their telomeres get shorter in length and it is a normal process of aging. So as clones age they will have even shorter telomeres than the average organism and their cells age faster. Many clones have a shorter life span than the average organism because of the medical and health issues that they will face in their life.
Cloning may cause many legal issues. One issue it may cause is fingerprinting and security reasons. If there are multiple clones of one person then in crime clones could scapegoat their other clones. It would really impact the crime system and being secure in your identity. If human cloning occured there would have to be a statement about who owns the genetic material. There would need to be because what if a clone wanted to clone itself, then they would need to ask all the other clones or they wouldn't need anyones approval. There would need to be many things taken into consideration when cloning a human. We think cloning would be very complicated legally, morally, and scientifically.
